Palm Beach County Declines DeSantis' Order To Lower Flags For Rush Limbaugh

Palm Beach County is declining to follow a directive from Gov. Ron DeSantis to lower flags to half-staff.

The governor on Tuesday ordered flags to be lowered in honor of Rush Limbaugh at three locations, including the Palm Beach County Courthouse in West Palm Beach, but a county commissioner tweeted Tuesday night that it was not happening.

Melissa McKinlay, a frequent critic of Gov. DeSantis, wrote that "Although Rush Limbaugh was a significant public figure, he was also an incredibly divisive one who hurt many people with his words and actions" and that she "cannot and will not support the lowering of flags in his memory."

The governor first announced that he intended to order state flags to half-staff in honor of the conservative talk show legend last week, after his death to lung cancer. That led to backlash from several state leaders, including Democrat Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried, who ordered people under her purview to "disregard" DeSantis' order.

West Palm Beach Mayor Keith James said earlier this week that the city would not lower its flags.

DeSantis also ordered flags be brought to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Wednesday at the Palm Beach Town Hall and the state Capitol in Tallahassee.

Limbaugh lived and died in Palm Beach.

We've reached out to McKinlay for further comment.
