Florida Kennel Club Announces Layoffs after Greyhound Racing Ban

(St. Petersburg, FL) -- A Tampa Bay company is planning what it calls a mass layoff this holiday season.

The St. Petersburg Kennel Club informed state officials last week it will start laying off 65 employees two days after Christmas, and the layoffs will continue through April. The company says the layoffs are the result of the passage, two years ago, of Amendment 13, which banned greyhound racing in Florida.

Despite the layoffs, live racing will continue at the track through the end of the year.
