Parental Consent On Abortions Bill Gets Final Legislative Approval

Minors who seek abortions would be required to obtain parental consent, under a bill that received final legislative approval Thursday night and has the support of the governor.

The vote in the House was 75-43, mostly along party lines.

Gov. Ron DeSantis asked the Legislature to send him the bill during his State of the State speech that kicked off the session last month.

The bill has a provision that will allow a girl to ask a judge for a waiver from the law in cases of abuse, incest or when involving a parent who could cause more harm than allowing the procedure.

Once it is signed by the governor, the law will take effect in July and Florida will join 26 other states in requiring at least one parent give written permission before a girl under 18 may receive an abortion.
