Slain State Trooper Laid To Rest After Tribute-Filled Service

Trooper Bullock Service

A Florida Highway Patrolman who was killed in the line of duty has been laid to rest.

42-year old Trooper Joseph Bullock was buried at Sarasota National Cemetery Thursday, after a memorial service that included a number of members of local law enforcement, including Martin County Sheriff William Snyder.

"The over-arching question for all of us here today was why. Why would a caring human being like Trooper Joseph Bullock be killed in the very act of helping someone? Why him?"

Snyder says Bullock became the first law enforcement officer to be killed in the line of duty in Martin County when he was shot by a driver whom he had pulled over to help last week on I-95.

There was a standing ovation for a Riviera Beach Police officer.

Detective Jemel Headings shot and killed Franklin Reed III after the man opened fire on Bullock.

Headings was off duty and driving on I-95 in Martin County when he was flagged down.

Florida Highway Patrol Major Robert Chandler introduced the officer to the crowd attending Bullock's service.

"Let's just say that that suspect that murdered Trooper Bullock couldn't hurt anybody else because of this detective. Thank you."

Bullock was an Air Force veteran.
