A Rise In Iguanas Keeping South Florida Removal Companies Busy

Iguana

If iguanas are tearing up your landscaping, you're not alone.

The problem is especially bad in South Florida, where removal companies are seeing a rise in the amount of iguanas, which are non-native.

"The iguanas have been here since about the 1950's, so they're what we consider an established species. The only thing that affects iguanas is very prolonged cold temperatures and we just don't have that typically here in South Florida."

Carol Lyn Parrish with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says that unlike the Nile Monitor lizards we've recently reported on, iguanas won't likely threaten small pets, but the vegetation around your home are a target...especially Hibiscus.

"Their favorite food is the Hibiscus flower. The brighter the color of the flower, the more attractive an iguana is to it. And Hibiscus, we landscape with that all over Florida."

Residents across South Florida are complaining about a growing number of iguanas in their neighborhoods.

Tips to keep the reptiles away include planting waxy or thick plants and installing motion activated sprinklers.
